We Want To Know How We Can Help

Our practice is fortunate to have an office staff comprised of genuinely caring individuals, all of whom have been invaluable members of our team for many years. When you reach out to us, these individuals will make it their priority to listen closely and comprehensively understand your reasons for seeking an appointment.

Our Staff Verifies Your Insurance Benefits

While you are on the phone, the staff member you are speaking with will also gather all information necessary to bill your insurance company. As a courtesy to you, our staff will then verify your benefits and make their best effort to understand the type and amount of mental health coverage you have available. The staff member you speak with can also provide an overview of the initial paperwork packet that you will be receiving in the mail. This packet includes questions about the concerns that led you to contact us, our office policy statement and an explanation of our HIPAA policies. We ask that you please complete this packet and return it to us prior to arriving for your initial session. By doing so, you will allow the counselor you are meeting with to review the information you have provided, and thus ensure that your time with them will be as productive as possible.

Your First Session

During your first session you will meet with an experienced counselor and have the opportunity to ask them any questions that you may have about the counseling process. Your therapist will spend time talking with you in order to better understand the problems you are experiencing, your treatment goals, and how to plan a course of counseling which will be most helpful for you. A primary goal during this initial appointment will be for you and your counselor to determine if you are the right fit for each other.

A Safe Place To Share

The therapist you meet with may ask some specific questions in order to learn more about the problems or concerns that led you to enter counseling. It will likely be helpful for them to talk with you about your family history, your current relationships, any previous counseling you’ve had, and your major life stressors. Your counselor will be especially interested in hearing about what you hope to accomplish in therapy, including any goals that you have set for yourself.

Finding The Right Therapist For You

After spending time getting to know each other, you and your psychologist will make a decision about whether you are a good fit to work with each other on resolving the problems that brought you in to our office. If for any reason the decision is made that you are not a good fit for each other, your psychologist will be happy to recommend another provider – either from within Allenmore Psychological Associates or the greater Tacoma, WA community – who may be a better match for your needs.

Next Steps Towards Feeling Better

If you and your counselor decide to continue working together, further counseling appointments can be scheduled at the conclusion of your first session. In certain cases, your therapist may also suggest that you complete a psychological test or inventory that will allow the two of you to more comprehensively understand your problems prior to your second appointment. Many counselors also recommend that their clients complete “homework assignments” between therapy sessions, because doing so typically enhances the progress people make in counseling.

Treatment That Is Accessible

One important advantage resulting from our long-term presence in Tacoma, WA and the surrounding Puget Sound region is that our counselors are recognized as preferred providers for every major local insurance company. For the last 30 years, one of Allenmore Psychological Associates' core values has been to make our mental health services accessible to as many people as possible. As a result, we have chosen to participate in most major Western Washington insurance and managed care panels.

Finding A Psychologist Covered By Your Plan

While Allenmore Psychological Associates as a group mental health practice participates as a preferred provider on all of our region’s major insurance and managed care panels, it is important to note that not all of our therapists are members of every panel. For this reason, our front office and insurance specialists are here to assist you in scheduling an appointment with a counselor who is covered under your specific insurance plan.

We Want You To Be Informed

Although we will do everything within our power to provide comprehensive verification of your benefits before your initial appointment, it is also important that you contact your insurance company and learn about your own benefits. As an insurance plan enrollee, it is your right to be informed about the details of the mental health benefits that you are afforded. Your insurance provider should be readily able to provide you with information about:
The number of sessions that your policy covers per year
   The size of your deductible
The amount or percentage of your co-pay and co-insurance
The types of mental health services that are covered under your plan.
Any mental health services that are not covered under your plan.

It is possible that not every type of treatment provided by a psychologist will be covered by your insurance policy. For example, some insurance companies may not reimburse for family therapy, marriage counseling, couples counseling, or biofeedback treatment. Being informed about your insurance coverage prior to entering counseling will allow you and your therapist to plan the most effective possible course of treatment for you. For more information, or to view a list of insurance panels in which our providers participate, please visit our Insurance & Payment page.

Free Mental Health Resources

Our team at APA understands that the vast majority of people struggle with psychological and relationship issues at points throughout their lives. We believe that helping our clients and other members of our greater-Tacoma community access the most useful tools and information available will empower them as they work to overcome these issues, both inside and outside of counseling. For this reason, our counselors and nurse practitioner have developed an extensive resources section within this site.

Like many truly worthwhile endeavors in life, the process of achieving this growth can be challenging at times.
